When Capital One, a financial service Fortune 500 Company, formed in 1996 and decided to build a new corporate headquarters building, they selected Ai Architecture as prime consultant. The new headquarters is a 14-story, 500,000 square foot building located in McLean, Virginia. The building consists of office space, commercial space, a conference center, a cafeteria with a kitchen, a fitness center, an outside dining terrace, and an underground parking garage.

Rathgeber/Goss Associates served as the structural consultant, providing full design services from schematic design through construction administration.

To accommodate the tight schedule for design and construction, RGA provided a foundation permit package along with early packages for concrete and steel. RGA also worked closely with Ai Architecture and Davis Construction to solve problems during the construction phase to maintain the tight schedule.

The building’s structure consists of an 11-story steel tower of long-span composite steel beams and deck with braced frames located in the building’s core to resist lateral loads. The steel tower is supported on top of a three-story concrete frame of post-tensioned concrete beams and mildly reinforced concrete slabs. Concrete shear walls resist the lateral loads from the steel tower along with lateral loads due to the unbalanced earth pressure. The façade is comprised of architectural precast and curtain wall, which are supported by the primary structure.

The building was completed in Spring 2003, and provides a flexible and efficient work environment for Cap One as the company continues to grow.
